Substantial Sounds – Spring 2014

subsnds_353x250This is Substantial Sounds for Spring 2014. This is where we talk about singles and albums that we think stood out. We are fortunate to receive an intense amount of incredible music from some of the best labels in Electronic Music. Subdivisions Global Radio is a dance music formatted show that receives a wide variety of music for consideration to be played each week. At Subdivisions Global Radio we have an array of taste and try to showcase that on a weekly basis. A lot of music was not getting exposed such as, full albums, compilations, down tempo, chill vibe, well thought out EP’s and a ton of dance singles. We know we can’t play or share everything but we now have a great opportunity to share a great variety of music that we think is solid and that people might not otherwise hear. We are excited to use this section to introduce you, our listeners, to some of these incredible sounds!

Agaric – Into the Large Air – We Are Records

Into the Large Air

Patrik Skoog, aka Agaric, more then delivers on the hype on his latest full length album “Into the Large Air” on We Are Records. I am a big fan of Agarics and we have played a lot of his music on the radio show over the years. This full length album is a testament to his talent being beyond just dance singles and remixes. “Into the Large Air” is full of texture, space, a bit of melody, and a ton of soul. A few stand outs for me include, “Future Days” with its low slung Detroit melody and spacey vibe, what a perfect way to start the journey off. I loved the slower shuffle and deep groove tempo of “Argot” which was the perfect segue into the short but beautiful melodic vibe of “Cross Sections”. “Berlin Methods”, a great track that reminds me of the slower Detroit techno tracks from the 90’s that I love so much. I can’t forget the spacial sound and vibe of “Sound of Wave”, a track that proves you can do a lot with a just a bassline, snare, a high hat and a bit of melody proving that sometimes less or no kick drum is king. I rank this album as a future classic!

Stewart Walker – Accidental Still Life – Mundo Records

Print

Mundo Records brings us “Stewart Walker – Accidental Still Life” EP. This 3 tracker starts of with “Passing Through” a deep vibe low slung gem with just the right amount of percussion. Next up we have “Accidental Still” a moody track that plays with just enough melody mixed with spacial beats to take you a up a notch. Last but not least is “Hospital Stay” a deep, spacey soulful house track with a deep organ bassline that is beyond catchy. I am looking forward to a Stewart Walker full length album!

Michael Brock – Scorpio EP – Hybridity Music

Michael Brock - Cover

Hybridity Music is back with the Michael Brock – “Scorpio” EP, a solid debut from the Vancouver native. I love things that are new and different but feel familiar. The standouts for me were “Scorpio” a nice deep groove track showcasing smooth vocals with guitar tinged tones on a low slung tip. “Green and Black” is a nice smooth soulful track with a restrained Drum & Bass vibe to it. “Scorpio” (8pm Remix) is a groovy change of pace, I enjoyed the stripped down sounds of the “Soundtracks” (Acoustic) mix. I think Michael Brock is on to something fresh with his alternative R&B fusion, mixed with the deeper side of house and electronic beats!

Ark Patrol – Ambition EP – Heroic Recordings

[HR015] Ambition EP

Nice, downtempo, trip-hop vibe from Hawaiian native Ark Patrol with his “Ambition” EP on Heroic Recordings. The deep piano, funk vibe of “Ambition” is the perfect way to get the party started. “Curse” keeps the deep goodness rolling with it’s catchy, swirling, female vocal and sparing keyboard play. “Tokyo” is a solid number with a glitchy but soulful sounding melody mixed with deeper house vibe bass tones keeping it deep and chill. Ark Patrol is looking to have a very bright future!

Hardkiss – 1991 – Hardkiss Music

Ross Ellis 12" 3mm 11073

The extremely talented Hardkiss are back at it, full force with their “1991” LP on Hardkiss Music. This 10 track album is full of super funky, soulful, fun beats sure to get any party started. Some of my favorites are “Revolution” (Hardkiss Brothers mix), this catchy tune will have you shaking your bum in no time. Gotta love the “RetrospectiveFuturisticPsychedelicFunkBump” with its buffet of funky sounds and beats. I love the catchy vocal progression and the 80’s Minneapolis – First Avenue style of “Don’t Worry”. I really dig the old school Technohouse keys mixed with funky soul on “Flowers Blooming / Glow of Love”. This album was a definite change of pace and a treat for this old school head!
